REPS MOVE TO CURB KIDNAPPING, BANDITRY THROUGH PRIVATE INTELLIGENCE

The House of Representatives on Wednesday deliberated on a new bill aimed at tackling criminal activities in the country, particularly kidnapping and banditry.

This followed the public hearing on the Private Intelligence and Investigation Council Bill, 2024, a proposed legislation targeted at reforming private security initiatives across the country.

There have been calls for the decentralisation of the Nigerian Police Force to allow for community policing in the past few years.

While state police is currently an item of possible constitutional amendment, security experts believe private security firms should be strengthened with a legislative framework to enable them to act within the ambit of the law.

Speaking at the event in Abuja, the Chairman of the House Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Ahmad Satomi, called on security stakeholders and indeed, all Nigerians to join hands in efforts to secure Nigerians and their properties.
