Opposition Reps pledge party loyalty amid APC defection surge

As early calculations and alignments for the 2027 general election gather momentum, some lawmakers elected on opposition platforms have ruled out defecting to the All Progressives Congress, despite a steady wave of departures that has further consolidated the party’s dominance in the National Assembly.

In recent months, opposition parties have been battered by internal wrangling, leadership tussles, and protracted litigation, triggering defections to the APC in both chambers. The exodus has handed the ruling party a comfortable two-thirds majority in the Senate and House of Representatives, a threshold that provides decisive leverage in constitutional amendments and other legislative business.

In the 360-member House, the APC now controls 241 seats, leaving 119 with seven opposition parties.
