Singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P of the defunct P-Square group, has defended his children speaking French after social media users questioned whether they could also speak Igbo, arguing that parents should be free to decide how they raise their children.
The exchange began on Monday after the singer shared a post from Paris, on X where he expressed admiration for how effortlessly his children communicate in French.
“Still in Paris!
Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a crib here in Paris.
ust a thought,” he wrote.
What appeared to be a casual reflection about life abroad soon sparked a conversation about language, culture and identity after an X user, @sambuddybest, asked, “Hope they can speak Igbo, too?”
Responding to the comment, Mr P questioned the practical value of Nigerian languages.
And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg,” he wrote.
His response immediately divided opinion online. While some users argued that teaching children indigenous languages helps preserve cultural heritage and identity, others defended the singer’s right to determine how his children are raised.
As criticism continued, the singer insisted that language choices within a family were a personal decision.
“When it’s your turn, teach your own kids all the languages in Nigeria if that’s your choice,” he wrote.
Mr P later returned with a series of posts, dismissing the criticism and urging people to focus on issues that concern them.
“I’ve got just three words for you: MYB — Mind Your Business.
“Go and find someone else to pour your frustration on. Not here.
