LAWMAKER ASKS INEC TO DEREGISTER DORMANT PARTIES

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Oluwole Oke, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to stop allocating funds and logistical support to inactive political parties, saying such entities add no electoral value and are only draining Nigeria’s resources.

Oke, who represents Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun State, called for deregistration of the inactive parties, lamenting that having their logos on ballot papers was causing confusion for the electorate.

He stated this in a position paper titled “Strengthening INEC’s Regulatory Role Over Political Parties to Safeguard Democratic Integrity,” released in Abuja, on Monday.

The lawmaker warned that many of the registered political parties had become tools for post-election blackmail rather than vehicles of representation.
