Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes Michael Carrick should be sacked, insisting that sometimes a manager needs to be relieved of his duties for his own good.
Carrick’s position has come under increasing pressure following Manchester United’s disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
The result left United 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone, raising further questions about the club’s decision to keep the 45-year-old head coach in charge.
Despite expectations that Carrick could lose his job after the Bournemouth defeat, United have decided to give him another opportunity to turn things around ahead of their trip to Chelsea on Saturday.
However, Neville believes the club’s decision to retain Carrick may be the result of poor planning, a lack of suitable alternatives and uncertainty over the next step.
“I don’t know this, but they’ve debated it to the point where they’ve got themselves into a muddle, and thought, ‘we’ll just stay with him’.”
Neville added that the club’s failure to make a decisive move could reflect a lack of preparation and uncertainty over the available replacement options.
